Andreas Schumacher (born January 27, 1803 in Vienna , Habsburg Monarchy ; died March 2, 1868 in Vienna, Austrian Empire ) was an Austrian writer, journalist and translator.

Life

Andreas Schumacher attended the Schottengymnasium for a while , but was unable to finish school for financial reasons. He lived a poor existence as a freelance writer and wage clerk. Between 1836 and 1838 he tried to find a livelihood as a clerk in the Hofkammerarchiv and then with the Danube Steamship Company . He was married and had three children.

He wrote short stories, cultural reviews, prose texts and reviews for various newspapers, magazines, journals and paperbacks. He published some almanacs for which he was able to attract prominent authors. He translated Shakespeare's sonnets and plays by Calderon , Moratin and Scribe into German.

Schumacher became Ludwig Anzengruber's guardian in 1844 . He took part in the revolution in 1848 and was sentenced to ten years imprisonment in Kufstein in 1849 . He was pardoned in 1851, but suffered from the consequences of imprisonment. In 1854 he became an employee of the Austrian Statistics Gazette and in 1856 he worked for the Finance Ministry, which improved his financial situation.
