from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Andreas Walther I (* around 1506 in Breslau , † around 1568 ibid ) was a German sculptor and electoral gunsmith . Differentiating it from other active artists with the same name as Andreas Walther II (sculptor, 1534-1584) and Andreas Walther III (sculptor, 1550-1592), he is called Andreas Walther I or Andrew Walter I. referred.

Life

He comes from a Silesian-Saxon family of artists . Andreas Walther I was born as the second son of Hans Walther I in Breslau. He is the younger brother of Christoph Walther I and the father of Christoph Walther II (1534–1584) and Andreas Walther II (around 1535–1581). In his childhood he had to work for his father in the execution of sculptural works. He also learned the craft of sculpting and carving and worked on various family objects.

He later learned the trade of a gunsmith in Wroclaw and became a recognized master gunsmith. He repaired hunting rifles for Prince Elector George II and was appointed Master Elector Gunsmith. An invoice from the Elizabeth Church in Breslau from July 27, 1546 shows that the master gunsmith worked on the church tower. He worked for the Brandenburg and Saxon courts, as well as for noble and ecclesiastical clients and created figures, epitaphs, tombs and reliefs made of sandstone, marble and alabaster in and around Brandenburg and Saxony. He died in 1568 of the plague raging in Wroclaw.
