Andreas Walther II

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Andreas Walther (* around 1530 in Breslau ; † around 1583 Dresden ) was a German sculptor and electoral gunsmith . To distinguish it from other active artists with the same name as Andreas Walther I (sculptor, 1506 to 1568) or Andreas Walther III (sculptor, 1550 to 1592), he is referred to as Andreas Walther II or Andreas Walther II .

Life

He came from a Silesian-Saxon family of artists . Andreas Walther II was born as the second son of Andreas Walther I in Breslau. He is the younger brother of Christoph Walther II . In his childhood he worked for his father in the execution of sculptural works. He learned carving as a sculptor and worked on various family objects. He also took part in his brother's commissions as a sculptor. Later he worked as a freelance sculptor in Breslau and from 1567 in Dresden.

From 1563 to 1565 he worked in Königsberg as an engineer and fortress builder for Duke Albrecht of Prussia . Then, in 1567, he was back in Wroclaw. The outbreak of the plague forced him to move to Dresden. He also worked on the commissions in the family sculptor's workshop at Terrassenstrasse 12 and then created independent work. In 1574 the Dresden Sculpture Guild accepted him. At the council meeting on August 23, 1577 he received the citizenship of the city of Dresden. He mainly worked for the Silesian and Saxon nobility . He created epitaphs , tombs and altars out of sandstone .

His epitaphs can be recognized by the simple, somewhat large-headed donor and saint figures. Instead, he liked his way of expressing himself for the framing architecture and the decoration of the pilasters and spandrels. He died in Dresden around 1583 and was buried in the Walther family floating arch on the Frauenkirchhof .
