Using real events, he tells the career of the (fictional) singing student Harald Gerneweg, who, having grown up in a middle-class background, comes to the SS more or less by chance and develops into a mass murderer. The novel appeared before Jonathan Littell's The Well-Minded and received a positive response due to its unusual perspective, its psychogrammatic character and the density of language.
