Jan von Klewitz (* 7. March 1964 in Zagreb ) is a German jazz - saxophonist .

Live and act

Von Klewitz spent part of his childhood in Copenhagen , where he received his first piano lessons. From 1972 he lived with his family in Berlin , where he first received clarinet and later saxophone lessons from 1976. After graduating from high school, studied at the Cologne University of Music and was a member of the Rhineland-Palatinate Youth Jazz Orchestra, with which he went on several international tours (USA, Malta). During his studies he worked with Gene Mighty Flea Connors , Ulla Osters Beyond Janis , the band Heinz , Georg Ruby , Dieter Manderscheid and Reinhard Kobialka. He was also involved in several album productions by JazzHausMusik .

In 1991 he moved back to Berlin, where he founded his own quartet with Wolfgang Köhler , Henning Sieverts and Bill Elgart . He became a member of the Franco-German jazz ensemble under the direction of Albert Mangelsdorff and in the Berlin Contemporary Jazz Orchestra with Alexander von Schlippenbach , Evan Parker , Aki Takase and Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky . He also played in the double quartet Double Dose with Conny and Matthias Bauer and in the Gossip quartet with Heinz Sauer and Nesin Howhannesijan .

Klewitz also played in numerous film music productions with Wolfgang Dauner , Stefan Lottermann , John Schröder , Steve Argüelles , Rudi Neuwirth , Michel Godard , Bob Degen and Christopher Dell . He performed at numerous national and international festivals such as the North Sea Jazz Festival , the JazzBaltica or the International Jazz Week Burghausen and was on a tour of Africa for the Goethe-Institut with the band Yakou Tribe . In 2007 he played with Christian von Kaphengst's quartet Cafe du Sport in India and Pakistan.

He also composes his own pieces for the Yakou Tribe quartet (with Kai Brückner (g), Johannes Gunkel (b), and Rainer Winch (d)), which has been in existence since 1999 . Together with pianist Markus Burger , he has now presented a series of four CDs with Spiritual Standards , in which the two also use European hymns. He also plays in the Nils Wülker Group , in Jazz Indeed with Michael Schiefel as singer, with Thärichens Tentett under the direction of Nicolai Thärichen and with Maria Baptist in the orchestra and in her quartet.

Jan von Klewitz is the brother of Anti and Andreas von Klewitz .
