The German Society for Shipping and Marine History e. V. (DGSM) is a non-profit German association that deals with the history of shipping . It is a forum and network for people, organizations and institutions in Germany and beyond who are interested in and involved in shipping and marine history.

The DGSM was founded in 1971 by the medical historian Hans Schadewaldt and the journalist and author Jochen Brennecke in Düsseldorf . In the GDR , Bernd Oesterle founded the working group for shipping and naval history . Both companies had largely similar goals and therefore merged on October 10, 1992 as DGSM e. V. together.

The DGSM wants to stimulate and increase the public's interest in all maritime historical questions, support, promote and make them understandable. It sees itself as a network for maritime historical thinking, research, discussion and publication of the results. The company therefore works, supports and promotes a. following subject areas:

  • History of the merchant navy and navy, as well as inland shipping
  • Maritime technology, business and shipping medicine history
  • History of shipbuilding, shipyards and ports
  • Social history of seafaring
  • History of navigation, oceanography
  • Maritime archeology
  • History of Maritime Meteorology
  • Maritime art history.

Meetings

  • Annual conference: Once a year, a multi-day conference with specialist lectures and sightseeing programs is held at “maritime” locations. The general assembly also takes place during the annual conference.
  • Scientific symposia: Symposia are held annually at various locations (e.g. Hamburg, Wilhelmshaven, Rostock, Dortmund, Berlin) on selected topics related to the history of shipping, including shipping and naval medicine. The lectures given at the symposia are published in this series.

In addition to the board, the DGSM also consists of the regional groups in Berlin , Hamburg , North Rhine-Westphalia and Thuringia . Further regional groups Stralsund / Rügen , Rostock and Western Pomerania form the state association of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . Additional lecture and tour programs are carried out in the regional groups. In addition, a scientific advisory board was established to advise the board of directors and society.

Publications

  • Schiff und Zeit - Panorama maritim : The maritime-historical magazine Schiff & Zeit publishedby the company from 1973 to 2012 was publishedtwice a year. The contributions contained illustrated work. It also includes reviews, reports from specialist congresses and news from the DGSM. From April 2013 to August 2020 Schiff & Zeit was replaced by the last six times a year magazine Schiff Classic , whereby the numbering of Schiff & Zeit was continued. Since August 2020, Schiff & Zeit has been published with the number 118 . Panorama maritime independent again. For the first time, however, the board of directors took over responsibility and put the editing in the hands of Dr. Dirk victory.
  • Yearbook of the DGSM : It contains the lectures of the annual conference as well as scientific contributions and reports from the work of the society.
  • Contributions to shipping history : The series has been published since 1999, up to volume 14, self-published by the DGSM. It contains contributions from special sessions and symposia that have taken place in association with other institutions. Since 2011, the series, now published by various renowned publishers, has also included monographs by members of the DGSM.
  • The signal guest : As member information of the DGSM, it has been published four times a year since 2016 and reports on events and projects in the field of society.
