Andreas von Oberstein (* around 1400 ; † August 22, 1450 ) was a noble canon , provost and archdeacon in the prince-bishopric of Speyer and the prince-bishopric of Worms .

Origin and family

He came from the noble family of the Lords of Oberstein and was the son of Andreas von Oberstein († 1413), founder of the Kredenburger family line to Alsterweiler and his wife Schonetta Hurth von Schönecken. His brother Richard von Oberstein († 1487) served as dean of the Mainz cathedral and provost of the collegiate monastery of St. Peter and Alexander in Aschaffenburg . Johann von Oberstein, another brother, became the Electoral Palatinate Vogt of the Heidelberg Oberamt and married Anna von Helmstatt , the niece of the Speyer bishop Raban von Helmstatt .

Live and act

Andreas von Oberstein enrolled at the University of Heidelberg on December 20, 1414 and again in January 1419, as a cleric of the Archdiocese of Mainz . On December 2, 1426 he appears for the first time in a document as the cathedral chapter of Speyer , where he had been canon since 1417. On January 30, 1432, Pope Eugene IV gave him the office of provost of St. Paul in Worms , combined with the dignity of archdeacon of the Worms cathedral church . Around 1438 Andreas von Oberstein was ordained priest, from June 18 of that year he held the pastory of Hoch-Weisel and in 1439 took over the provost of the Speyer All Saints' Monastery with the local archdeaconate of St. Trinity . In 1440 Bishop Reinhard von Helmstatt sent him to the Mainz Provincial Council in Aschaffenburg as his representative . After the death of the Speyer cathedral dean Nikolaus Burgmann in 1443 there was an ambiguous election of his successor; Andreas von Oberstein and Johann von Venningen were the candidates. The Bishop of Worms, Friedrich von Domneck , who was called as mediator, decided in favor of the opponent Johann von Venningen, later as Johann V , Bishop of Basel .

Andreas von Oberstein died in August 1450 and was buried in the (no longer existing) cloister of the Speyer Cathedral .
