Andreas von Stechow

Andreas Johann Alexander von Stechow (born August 23, 1943 in Ranis ; † November 17, 2013 in Berlin ) was a German diplomat .

family

Von Stechow was a son of the German diplomat Johann Karl von Stechow . He had two brothers, Christian and Arnim von Stechow.

Andreas von Stechow was married several times, most recently with the Japanese opera singer Junko Ohtsu-von Stechow . There are two sons from the first marriages.

Life

After attending school in Germany, Italy and Denmark , von Stechow began studying law at the University of the Philippines in 1963 . He continued this from 1965 in connection with a degree in economics at the University of Bonn . In 1969 he finally passed the first state examination in law.

After joining the Foreign Service in 1971, his first assignment abroad took him to France, before moving to the ministerial office under Walter Scheel in 1973 . From 1973 to 1976 he made a stop at the embassy in Tanzania before he went back to the parliamentary department of the ministerial office for three years. He then went to the embassy in Antananarivo until 1982 . He then worked again for three years at the Permanent Mission to the United Nations , during which time he also took part in GATT negotiating rounds. In 1985 he was appointed Deputy Head of the EU External Relations Unit , which he took over in 1987. From 1990 to 1997 he headed the economic department at the embassy in Tokyo . He then became head of the trade promotion department. In 1999 he returned to Bonn and took over as deputy head of the economic department in the Foreign Office.

From 2001 to 2005 von Stechow was ambassador in Bangkok . During his term of office, the tsunami fell on December 26, 2004 with around 600 German victims.

From 2006 to 2008 he was the Federal Republic's ambassador for Switzerland and Liechtenstein , based in Bern .

In 2012 he was honored with the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon by Federal President Gauck.

He is buried in Stechow in the community of Stechow-Ferchesar .
