The Andreassteig ( Ukrainian Андріївський узвіз / Andrijiwskyj etc ; Russian Андреевский спуск / Andrejewski spusk ) is one of the oldest streets in the Ukrainian capital Kiev .

Due to its numerous old buildings and the local artist scene, the Andreassteig is the most famous street in the city after the Chreschtschatyk and is often referred to as the “Ukrainian or Kiev Montmartre ”.

location

The Andreassteig is located in the historic Podil district on the right bank of the Dnieper in the center of Kiev. It runs over a length of 750 meters from Kontraktowa Square , the heart of the Podil, up a hill to the Kiev Upper Town on Wolodymyrska Street .

Surname

In the upper town, the Andreassteig ends at the St. Andrew's Church , which gave the street its name.

According to legend, the Andreassteig was named after the apostle Andreas , who allegedly climbed the hill on this path from the Dneprufer 2000 years ago and prophesied the founding of a large Christian city there .

Development

One of the historical buildings on the street is the " Richard the Lionheart Castle ", the poetic name for the house with number 15 built in the 19th century in neo-Gothic style. There are also numerous souvenir shops , monuments, galleries , artist studios , theaters and along the street Museums like the Mikhail Bulgakov Museum (No. 13), the One Street Museum (No. 2b) and the museum workshop of Ivan Kawaleridze (No. 21).

restoration

The Andreassteig has been extensively restored since 2011, but old buildings are also being demolished and new buildings erected, which led to outrage among the Kiev population and speculation about connections and corruption between business and politics.
