Andrei Pawlowitsch Petrov ( Russian Андрей Павлович Петров , scientific transliteration Andrej Pavlovič Petrov ; born September 2, 1930 in Leningrad , † February 15, 2006 in Saint Petersburg) was a Russian composer who wrote both classical music and music for over 80 Soviet and wrote Russian films.

Life

Andrei Petrow graduated from the Rimsky-Korsakov Music School in 1949 and the Leningrad Conservatory in 1954 - as a student of Orest Jewlachow . He wrote numerous classical works for ballet (including Shores of Hope , Creation of the World , Pushkin ), operas ( Peter the Great ) and symphonies ( Vivat, Olympus ). He had a close friendship with Dmitri Shostakovich .

Andrei Petrow became one of the most sought-after film music composers and received various state awards, such as in 1967, 1976 and 1980.

His film melodies were popular and well-known nationwide. Works that came from his pen often led a life of their own independent of film and were perceived as a general cultural asset. That was, according to him, the greatest reward that could be bestowed upon him as a composer.

In 1993 the asteroid (4785) Petrov was named after him.

Andrei Petrow died on February 15, 2006 of complications from a cerebral haemorrhage. He was buried in the Volkovo Cemetery in Saint Petersburg.
