Andrew "Freddie" Flintoff , MBE (born December 6, 1977 in Preston , Lancashire ) is a retired English cricketer .
Career
Flintoff was appointed to the England national team for the first time in 1998 . At that time, however, he lacked consistency. In addition, his fitness was insufficient, so that he did not become a regular member of the national team. Rather, it remained with isolated missions.
It was only in 2003 that Flintoff had developed into a significantly improved overall player and was used regularly. The next year he was one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year .
In 2005 he was instrumental in the first victory of the English national team in the Ashes series after 18 unsuccessful years. That year he was also named BBC Sports Personality of the Year , UK Sportsman of the Year.
In 67 test matches he managed 100 or more runs as a batsman five times and he scored 197 opposing wickets . In 127 One-Day Internationals (ODI) he scored 100 or more runs and 146 wickets three times.
Flintoff is the third best English thrower in one-day internationals and twelfth best in test matches. It also ranks ninth in terms of the number of runs in ODIs. In 1998, Flintoff hit 34 runs in an over from Surrey's bowler Alex Tudor. Flintoff holds the English record for the most "sixes" (kicking the ball straight out of the field) in Test matches.
Flintoff is injured relatively often. He has already had four ankle operations. Therefore, he was canceled for a large part of the 2007 and 2008 seasons as well as the tour in between. He also repeatedly has difficulties in keeping to the team rules. At the 2007 Cricket World Cup , he was internally banned from a game after repeated previous warnings after falling drunk from a pedal boat .
In September 2010 he ended his cricket career and started as a boxer. He won his first fight on points against Richard Dawson.
From February 15 to March 15, 2015, he was a participant in the Australian reality show I'm a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! and won the show.
From the 27th season of the television series Top Gear , he appears as a presenter.
Private life
Flintoff has been married to Rachael Wools since 2005. The couple has three children.
His nickname is Freddie because of the similarity of his surname with the cartoon character Fred Flintstone (German: Fred Feuerstein).
