Andrew Jackson Goodpaster (born December 2, 1915 in Granite City , Illinois - † May 16, 2005 in Washington, DC ) was an American general and the sixth Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR).

Life

Goodpaster began his military career in 1939 with the US Military Academy at West Point , which he completed with the appointment of Second Lieutenant . During World War II he was battalion commander of the 48th Engineering Battalion of the US Army Corps of Engineers in Africa and Italy.

This was followed by studies at Princeton University from 1947 to 1950 with the degrees of Master of Science in mechanical engineering, Master of Arts and a doctorate in international relations. In Germany he was division commander of the 8th US Infantry Division . From 1954 to 1961 he was staff secretary and military advisor ( Staff Secretary and Defense Liaison Officer ) to US President Dwight D. Eisenhower . From 1961 to 1967 he held the post of assistant to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff . During the Vietnam War , Goodpaster was Deputy Commander in Chief of US troops from 1968 to 1969.

He served as an advisor to President Richard Nixon to hold the post of Allied Commander-in-Chief in Europe (SACEUR) from 1969 to 1971. With that he also took over command of the US European Command . From 1977 to 1981 he returned to West Point as superintendent. He then became a Senior Fellow at the Eisenhower Institute . Most recently, he chaired the Atlantic Council and the George C. Marshall Foundation. In 1992 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
