Dave Richard Palmer (born May 31, 1934 in Ada , Oklahoma ) is a former US Army Lieutenant General who was superintendent of the US Military Academy at West Point between 1986 and 1991 . He was also President of Walden University from 1995 to 1999 .

Life

Palmer, son of David Furman Palmer and his wife Lorena Marie Clardy Palmer, grew up in New York and Texas and began military training at the US Military Academy in West Point , which he graduated in 1956. After his promotion to lieutenant , he was an officer in the armored location Berlin and later company commander of a tank company of the 1st Armored Division ( 1st Armored Division ) , the Old Ironsides . He then found various uses in the US Army and completed postgraduate studies inHistory at Duke University , which he finished in 1966 with a Master of Arts (MA History). He then taught as an instructor in the Department of Military Art and Engineering at the US Military Academy and was from 1969 to 1971 commander of the 2nd Battalion of the 33rd Armored Regiment Spearhead , the 3rd Armored Division ( 3rd Armored Division ) , and was recognized for its honored achievements there with the Legion of Merit . During the Vietnam War , between 1971 and 1972, he was military advisor to the government of South Vietnam and received another Legion of Merit for this.

This was followed by further training at the US Army War College (USAWC) in Carlisle , which Palmer finished in 1973. He was a staff officer in the US Department of Defense from 1973 to 1976 and was awarded another Legion of Merit for his services there. He then served from 1976 to 1977 commander of the 1st Brigade in Fort Hood stationed 2nd Armored Division ( 2nd Armored Division ) , the so-called "Hell on Wheels". Subsequently, between 1976 and 1979 he was again a staff officer in the planning and policy department (Office of the J-5, Plans and Policy Directorate) in the United General Staff (Joint Staff) in the US Department of Defense and received the Defense Superior Service Medal for this . In 1981 he returned to Germany and was in command of the US Baumholder garrison until 1983 . Upon his return, he served as deputy commandant of the Command and General Staff College (CGSC) at Fort Leavenworth from 1983 to 1985 and as commander of the 1st Armored Division between June 1985 and July 1986 . He was awarded the Army Distinguished Service Medal for his services as Deputy Commandant of the CGSC . Most recently, in 1986, he replaced Lieutenant General Willard Warren Scott, Jr. as superintendent of the US Military Academy at West Point and held this post until his retirement in 1991, whereupon he was succeeded by Lieutenant General Howard D. Graves . In 1990 Duke University awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy (Honorary Ph.D. ) and he was awarded another Army Distinguished Service Medal.

Palmer served on the board of directors of Walden University between 1992 and 2001 and was president between 1995 and 1999. He then served as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Walden e-Learning, Incorporated from 1999 to 2000 .

His marriage to LuDelia Clemmer on April 13, 1957 resulted in the children Allison and J. Kersten Palmer.
