Andrew Watson

Andrew John Watson (born July 16, 1961 ) is a British Anglican theologian . He has been Bishop of Guildford in the Church of England since 2014 .

Life

Watson came from a religious family. His paternal grandparents, who had a decisive influence on his life, worked as missionaries in the southwest of the Republic of China . He attended Winchester College . He studied law at Corpus Christi College of Cambridge University . During his student days he was an active musician. He played the bassoon in various orchestras and chamber music ensembles . After graduating, he worked as a caretaker and youth social worker in Islington , London.

In preparation for the priesthood he attended Ridley Hall Theological College in Cambridge . In 1987 he was ordained . He began his priestly career as vicar ( curate ) at St Peter's Church in Ipsley in the Diocese of Worcester (1987–1991) and at St. John's and St. Peter's Church in Notting Hill in the Diocese of London (1991–1996) . During his tenure, he was responsible for the restoration of St. John's and St. Peter's Church, which can also be seen several times as a backdrop in the Notting Hill movie. He set up a community café, daycare center and prison visitation service there. He was then from 1996 to 2008 pastor ( Vicar ) at St Stephen's Church in East Twickenham , where he was responsible for the construction of three other churches. He made community trips to Norway , Sweden and sent aid teams to Donetsk and the slums of New Delhi . Since 2003 he was Dean ( Area Dean ) of Hampton ; he held this office until he was promoted to bishop. From 2000 to 2008 he was a member of the General Synod of the Church of England.

In September 2008 he was appointed suffragan Bishop in the Diocese of Birmingham in the Church of England as "Bishop of Aston" . He was ordained bishop on October 28, 2008 in St Paul's Cathedral . As "Bishop of Aston" he was responsible for running the Transforming Church program.

In September 2014, his appointment as Bishop of Guildford was announced. He succeeded Christopher Hill , who retired in September 2013. In November 2014, his election as Bishop of Guildford was canonically confirmed during a service at St Mary le Bow Church in London. His inauguration and enthronement as "Bishop of Guildford" will take place on February 28, 2015 at Guildford Cathedral .

Watson is the author of the theological works The Fourfold Leadership of Jesus (Bible Reading Fellowship (BRF) 2008), Confidence in the Living God (BRF 2009) and The Way of the Desert (BRF 2011).

Family and private

Watson is married. His wife Beverly grew up in the West Midlands ; both had met while studying theology at Ridley Hall Theological College. In 2008 his wife Beverly was ordained a deacon at St Paul's Cathedral . The marriage had four children, two sons and two daughters.

Hobbies include making music , reading , cooking , photography, and walking the South West Coast Path. He is particularly interested in China, which he has already toured.
