The Joint Base Andrews (formerly Andrews Air Force Base ) is a military airfield of the US Air Force and a census-designated place in the US state of Maryland , USA , about 15 km southeast of Washington, DC
It is the government airport of the US capital . From here the flights of the US President are mainly carried out with Air Force One and other members of the government and foreign state guests are received.
Andrews AFB is under the jurisdiction of the Air Force District of Washington (AFDW) and has two runways : 01R / 19L (2975 m) and 01L / 19R (2835 m). In addition to the 89th Airlift Wing, which is responsible for Air Force One , it houses various agencies of the American Air Force and units of the Reserve Forces ( Air National Guard , Air Force Reserve Command ) and is also used by the US Navy . At the end of 2006 around 5,500 soldiers were stationed there .
history
First established as Camp Springs Army Air Field on August 25, 1941 , the airfield began operations on May 2, 1943. In honor of General Frank M. Andrews , who headed air operations in Europe during World War II and had a fatal accident in Iceland on May 3, 1943 , the base was renamed Andrews Field on March 31, 1945 . With the establishment of the US Air Force in 1948, the name changed to Andrews Air Force Base .
The US government's VIP aircraft ( Air Force One and Air Force Two ) have been stationed here since July 1961 . In June 2006, the 316th Wing of the AFDW took over the management of the 89th Airlift Wing of the Air Mobility Command .
Malcolm Grow Medical Facility
The United States Air Force's "Malcolm Grow Medical Clinic" military hospital is located on the premises . The facility was founded in 1958 and is named after the first Surgeon General of the United States Air Force Malcolm C. Grow .
