Bishop Andrzej Śliwiński

Andrzej Józef Śliwinski (born January 6, 1939 in Werblinia, Pomeranian Voivodeship , Poland ; † September 9, 2009 in Elbląg , Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship , Poland) was the Roman Catholic Bishop of Elbląg .

Life

Andrzej Śliwiński studied from 1956 to 1961 at the seminary of the Kulm diocese in Chełmno and was ordained a priest on December 17, 1961 . After his vicariate he studied from 1964 to 1968 at the Catholic University of Lublin and received his doctorate in Catholic dogmatics . From 1970 to 1986 he was vicar general of the Kulm diocese.

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Arindela in 1986 and appointed him auxiliary bishop in Chełmno. The Archbishop of Warsaw, Cardinal Józef Glemp , donated him episcopal ordination on June 15, 1986 ; Co- consecrators were Marian Przykucki , Bishop of Kulm, and Henryk Muszynski , Auxiliary Bishop in Chełmno. In 1992 he was appointed the first bishop of the newly founded diocese of Elbląg.

Śliwiński was the chaplain of Polish athletes. From 1987 to 2006 he was President of the Union of Catholic Sportsmen of the Republic of Poland.

In 2003, at the behest of the Vatican, he had to resign from his office as a bishop because he had caused a car accident while under the influence of alcohol.
