Andy Breckman (born March 3, 1955 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American screenplay and sketch writer , television producer and radio host . He is best known as the inventor and executive producer of the television series Monk .

biography

Breckman interrupted his studies at Boston University in the first semester off to when stand-up comedian and folk - singer to try and also released two albums. In 1980 he went on tour with the singer Don McLean . Also in the 1980s, Breckman wrote sketches for the comedy television shows Saturday Night Live and Late Night with David Letterman . For this work he was nominated for an Emmy Award in 1984 and 1987 .

In the following decades, however, Breckman distinguished himself more in his capacity as a comedy screenwriter, initially taking on rather mediocre casual work until he was finally able to distinguish himself with hits like IQ and Rat Race .

Since October 1991, Breckman has also hosted a weekly comedy “call-in” radio show called Seven Second Delay on the WFMU station along with the station's current manager, Ken Freedman (whose name he was on the design team for the rocket sled “Lightning ll “ Built into Rat Race ).

In the fall of 2001, Breckman briefly taught as an associate professor at Columbia University . His course was on writing for television comedy productions. Breckman also wrote some lyrics for the 2003 Academy Awards , for which he was nominated for the 2004 Writers Guild of America Award . In December 2003 he toured with Al Franken as part of a United Service Organizations program for US soldiers in Iraq , Uzbekistan , Kuwait and Afghanistan .

Breckman currently lives in Madison , New Jersey with his second wife, documentary filmmaker Beth Landau, whom he was married to in early 2004 by Jerry Zucker . In addition to two daughters and a son from his first marriage, Breckman has a daughter and a son with his current wife.
