Andrew "Andy" Sidaris (born February 20, 1931 in Chicago , Illinois , † March 7, 2007 in Beverly Hills , Los Angeles , California ) was an American director , film producer , screenwriter and actor .

Life

Sidaris was born in Chicago in 1931 and grew up in Shreveport , Louisiana , where he attended CE Byrd High School. He later studied in Dallas at Southern Methodist University .

In 1950 he began his television career as a stage manager at the television station WFAA in Dallas. From the beginning of the 1960s he turned to the production of sports programs. In 1961 he directed the first episode of the ABC show Wide World of Sports . He was involved in the introduction of techniques such as instant replay , slow-motion replay and split screens in sports broadcasts and established the so-called "honey shots", close-ups of cheerleaders and attractive women in the audience at sporting events. From 1964 to 1988 he also produced broadcasts of the Olympic Games for ABC. Together with seven other directors, he was awarded an Emmy in the category Outstanding Achievement in Sports Programming in 1969 for his directorial work at the broadcast of the Summer Olympics in Mexico .

From the early 1970s he turned to the production of films and television series. Among other things, he directed an episode of the television series Einsatz in Manhattan . He choreographed the football scene for Robert Altman in the 1970 film MASH .

However, Sidaris became known for his trashy B-movies , which he produced very cheaply and quickly. Between 1973 and 1998 a total of twelve feature films were made, the plot of which was often rather secondary and which instead were limited to the display of large-caliber weapons and attractive actresses. Sidaris often worked with playmates such as Roberta Vasquez, Dona Speir, Hope Marie Carlton and Cynthia Brimhall. After the financial success with Malibu Express in 1985, Sidaris produced seven more films as loose sequels until 1993. He later referred to the series as "Bullets, Bombs and Babes". He gave the same title to his book, published in 2003, in which he described the making of the films.

On 7 March 2007 Sidaris died in Beverly Hills to throat cancer .

The marriage with Arlene T. Sidaris resulted in two daughters and the son Christian Drew Sidaris , who also worked as a director and actor. Arlene Sidaris was involved in the production of all of her husband's films and has been running the official Andy Sidaris website since his death.
