Protoanemonin (also anemonol or ranunculol ) is a lactone of hydroxy-penta-2,4-dienoic acid, which occurs as a toxin in all buttercups .
It is released when the plants are damaged and when it comes into contact with the skin or mucous membranes, symptoms of poisoning such as reddening, itching or even blistering of the skin (buttercup dermatitis) occur. When absorbed internally, it affects the nervous system: vomiting, diarrhea and dizziness occur, but also cramps and symptoms of paralysis.
It is effective against fungi.
When the plant dries, protoanemonin is converted into the non-toxic anemonin .
