Beginning of a novel (Czech: Počátek románu, JW 1/3) is an opera in one act and three pictures by Leoš Janáček with a libretto by Jaroslav Tichý based on a short story by Gabriela Preissová , which is inspired by a painting by Jaroslav Věšín . Composed in 1891, it was premiered on October 10, 1894 at the National Theater in Brno . The music uses popular songs and dances in the spirit of easy folk comedy.

action

The pretty villager Poluška falls in love with Baron Adolf, although she has given a pledge to her love to Tonek, a young man from the same social circle. Tonek is depressed, the gamekeeper surprises the two intertwined lovers and warns the girl's parents. Their father is offended when his delighted mother organizes a meeting with Baron Adolf's father to arrange the wedding, but something comes between the two families of very different social status, so that Poluška returns to the faithful Tonek, while the baron is with him a countess finds happiness.
