Work history

Šárka is Janáček's first opera. It is based on a libretto by Julius Zeyer that he had actually written for Antonín Dvořák . Zeyer therefore refused Janáček the text rights. Nevertheless, he drafted the short score in 1887 and orchestrated the first two acts the following year, making a few changes. After 1916, after the rights to Zeyer's libretto had expired, he revised the work again, leaving the instrumentation of the third act to his student Osvald Chlubna . A final revision took place in 1924 in preparation for the premiere.

The premiere took place on November 11, 1925 in the National Theater Brno under the direction of František Neumann with Emil Olšovský as Ctirad and Hana Pírková as Šárka. Directed by Otakar Zítek. There were further productions in Olomouc in 1938, in Brno in 1958 and in Ostrava in 1978.
