Peter Günschel (born January 7, 1980 in Bernau near Berlin ) is a German basketball coach who has been in the first and second basketball league since 2007 .

Career

Günschel grew up in Brandenburg and began his coaching career at the age of 18 in his hometown with SSV Lok Bernau . After graduating from high school, he went to Leverkusen and worked for TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen as a youth coach for three years . In addition, he studied from 2001 at the German Sport University in Cologne. In 2002 he moved to Berlin to TuS Lichterfelde , the then partner association of ALBA Berlin . At Tusli he also worked as an assistant coach in the 2nd Bundesliga and 1st Regional League, among others with the later national players Heiko Schaffartzik and Guido Grünheid . In 2004 he and Konstantin Lwowsky won the German U18 Championship with the later Bundesliga players Robert Kulawick and Achmadschah Zazai .

In the same year he took over the coaching position at the men's regional league promoted AdW Berlin and secured relegation twice in a row. In November 2006, Günschel went to the University of Portland and worked as a guest trainer with the Portland Pilots during the 2007 season and summer camps.

In 2007 Günschel became assistant coach under John Patrick at the BG Göttingen in the first basketball league . As an outsider, the "Veilchen" secured their relegation five game days before the end with a 69:67 success in Bonn. In the following year, Göttingen was again considered a relegation candidate due to the small budget and after a good season secured second place behind Alba Berlin with 25 wins (out of nine defeats). In addition, Günschel took over the U14 of the club during the 2007-2008 season and led them to the championship in Lower Saxony as bottom of the table. In the North German championship, the team was eliminated only in the semi-finals against the eventual German champions Alba Berlin.

In 2009 Günschel moved to the side of Michael Koch to become runner-up in Bonn. With the Telekom Baskets he also took part in international competitions (Eurocup and Eurochallenge) and among other things reached the cup final in 2012. In the same year he moved to Braunschweig to join the New York Phantoms around the future NBA player Dennis Schröder . For personal reasons he left Braunschweig again during the season.

In 2013 Günschel made his debut as head coach in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB . He coached RSV Eintracht Stahnsdorf for two years and reached the play-off quarter-finals with the team in 2014 for the first time in the club's history.

In 2015 he took over the “ farm team ” from s.Oliver Würzburg in the ProB and also worked as an assistant to Doug Spradley in the BBL team, which reached the play-offs as a promoted team. In 2017, the ProB team under Günschels leadership reached the championship round with a strong second half of the season (7-4 wins) and three wins from the last four games. In the first play-off round, the young Würzburg team prevailed with 2-1 wins against Artland Dragons , the promotion favorites from Quakenbrück . In the second round, the team again fought for a playoff, but lost it with the home-strong ScanPlus Baskets Elchingen .

In 2014 Günschel was awarded the Berlin Prize for Sports Science. For his diploma thesis on the subject of “coordination training in the first basketball league” he received the top grade of 1.0.

After his time in Würzburg, Günschel worked as a youth coach at Alba Berlin and was a university teacher for basketball and sports games at the Humboldt University in Berlin .
