Angel Express is a German feature film by Rolf Peter Kahl from 1998. In episodes, the film tells of Berlin city life. It had its premiere on July 1, 1998 at the Munich Film Festival . It opened in theaters on April 15, 1999.
content
Exhausted from work, a young woman gets into a taxi. In the rearview mirror, the driver recognizes that she is a prostitute. It turns out that she studies law during the day. She starts a long talk about the lack of union structures and legal regulation in her trade. Finally she pulls out a gun and robbed the driver.
The film is a person puzzle with no classic dramaturgy. He tells of the desperate prostitute, the policeman in love, the photographer, the model and the eccentric. They are all big city singles who live day and night in search of themselves and others.
background
The production companies were Roxy Film (Munich) and ErdbeermundFilm (Berlin), who realized the film with financial support from the Filmboard Berlin-Brandenburg . The shooting lasted from November 25 to December 21 1997th
A director's cut for the film was released in 2011 , which premiered on January 18 at the Max Ophüls Preis film festival in Saarbrücken.
reception
The film-dienst saw a "first film that constructs an atmosphere of cold and loneliness, techno and speed". In doing so, the figures "in their habitus, but also in their dialogues too quickly become recognizable as artificial products". Cinema particularly emphasized the “great young actors”. The "rhythm [...] of the greed for life" is provided by "a mercilessly hammering soundtrack", yet the characters' gestures remain "empty, their paths aimless". In this way a “disaffected portrait” would emerge, which Kahl would “intelligently” draw.
Awards
At the Max Ophüls Film Festival 1999, Rolf Peter Kahl was nominated for the Max Ophüls Prize. In 1998, the film was nominated for the audience award at the Oldenburg International Film Festival .
