Angel Heart ( Jap. エンジェル·ハート , Enjeru Hato ) is a his - Manga by Tsukasa Hojo and appears in Japan since 2001. It was also adapted as an anime series. Many characters from the anime / manga City Hunter appear in the series .

action

A young girl stands on a skyscraper in Shinjuku at night , her name is Glas Heart , a code name given to her by the criminal organization Zheng Dao Hui from Taiwan. She belongs to an elite group called Suzaku, of which four exist, Byakko , Gembu , Suzaku and Qinglong . Since she can no longer bear to murder innocent people on behalf of Zheng Dao Hui , after a phone call from her contact who congratulates her on completing the 50th assignment , she jumps off the skyscraper and lands right on a fence that spans her heart pierced.

At the same time, Kaori Makimura is on her way to meet her fiancé Ryō Saeba . On the way there, she sees a toddler who stops dead on a zebra crossing and is almost run over by a truck. Kaori pushes the girl out of the way with a jump and is hit by the truck herself. A short time later she is declared brain dead and her organs are removed for organ donation purposes. However, her heart is stolen by Zheng Dao Hui to transplant it to Glas Heart , as she is the daughter of the organization's boss, believed to be lost and dead. She does not know this fact and the boss Li Jianqiang only found out about it shortly before her suicide attempt.

A year later, Glas Heart is still in a coma. You slowly give it up and want to switch off the life-sustaining machines if it does not regain consciousness within a certain period of time. In a coma, Glas Heart keeps dreaming certain dreams. Sometimes she sees her orders, sometimes she dreams of a person: Ryō Saeba. In her, or rather through Kaori's feelings for him, the desire to meet him arises. Kaori herself still "lives" in the form of her soul in her heart, which has now been implanted in Glas Heart . With the desire to meet Ryō Saeba again, Glas Heart wakes up and sets off on the journey from Taiwan to Japan.

Meanwhile, Ryō has given up the activity as City Hunter (another work by Tsukasa Hōjō) and surrenders to alcohol and women out of mourning over the death of Kaori. By chance he learns that the stolen heart is still "alive" and that it is now in Glas Heart . Glas Heart , who has just arrived in Shinjuku, is embroiled in an intrigue by the Qinglong department of Zheng Dao Hui . She is charged with assassinating Boss Li Jianqiang in revenge . This intrigue leads to public unrest in Shinjuku, as the organization there also had an area of control and they go in search of Glas Heart . Her only goal, driven by Kaori's feelings, is to find Ryō. Both meet in the Cat's Eye, a café run by an old friend Ryōs Hayato Ijuin Umibōzu or Falcon.

Zheng Dao Hui's boss is still alive because not he, but his twin brother and doppelganger Li Qiande was shot. He sends his elite troop Gembu to execute the traitors Qinglong and thus helps Ryō, who with a handful of friends wants to protect Shinjuku from a terrorist attack by Qinglong and fight a battle with them in a previously sealed off love hotel district of Shinjuku , delivers.

Li Jianqiang then asks Ryō to be a kind of father figure for Glas Heart and to rehabilitate her. Because she no longer thinks like a "normal" person after years of strict and merciless training, but rather resembles a machine that has been programmed to kill. This is also Glas Hearts wish, who still does not know that she is Li Jianqiang's daughter . From this point on she calls her Ryō, Ryō-papa. Kaori continues to call herself only Kaori until one more dream, after which she also calls her Kaori-mama and sees both of them as her real parents, since she never met her actual parents.

Ryō gives Glas Heart the name Xiangying which means "Kaori's heart" in Chinese and which is also her real name, which she got from Li Jianqiang . Ryō resumes his job as a city hunter at the request of Li Jian Qiang , as he was appalled that Ryō stopped doing so and he believes Shinjuku needs City Hunter . Ryō and Xiangying experience all sorts of adventures, as a result of which Xiangying is able to gradually re-socialize and come to terms with their past.

City Hunter

City Hunter is a kind of detective agency that accepts any kind of task. To get in contact with City Hunter you have to write the letters XYZ and your order on an old board at the east exit of Shinjuku. The jobs are mostly personal protection, but they can be of any nature. One assignment, for example, is the search for a father who has been reported missing.

people

Ryō Saeba ( 冴 羽 獠 )

A former mercenary who stood on the battlefield with Falcon , but both on the other side. He has a kind of private detective agency (City Hunter), originally founded by Kaori Makimura's adoptive brother Hideyuki Makimura, who was a police officer. He himself is not there from the beginning, but only joins after he has been cared for by Kaori, who was a nurse. He actually came to Shinjuku with the order to eliminate City Hunter, but thinks of better after he experiences the warmth of Kaori and she cries for him and whispers to him that he should come back to himself and go on living. And if there is no one for him to live for, let him live for her. Since, like Glas Heart / Xiangying, he has no past and does not know who he is and he only knows war, this warmth and openness is something new for him and he swears to himself to keep Kaori happy and stays in Shinjuku and supports Hideyuki Makimura in the role of City Hunter . After his death he continued working with Kaori and fell in love with Kaori.
He plays the role of the perverted ladyboy in which he never misses an attempt to have sexual contact with women. In contrast to the manga, the anime never gets that far, since any "advances" are prevented by Kaori, who hits him against the wall with an oversized wooden mallet. However, there is also a serious side to him that makes it clear that he is a former mercenary. His trademarks are his black jeans, the olive green T-shirt, the purple jacket and the exclamation "モ ッ コ リ" ( Mokkori ). His standard weapon is a Magnum 325.

Li Xiangying ( 李 香 瑩 )

Former Zheng Dao Hui organization's top hit man commits suicide after she can no longer bear to kill people. She has Kaori Makimura's heart transplanted and survives the suicide attempt. Through the transplant, it gradually takes on the properties of Kaori. She is the daughter of the boss Li Jianqiang of the Zheng Dao Hui organization but knows nothing about it. She sees her parents in Ryō Saeba and Kaori Makimura and lives with Ryō under one roof. In certain situations Kaori takes over her body and talks or acts. From the outside, she remains - except for Ryō, who "sees" Kaori - Xiangying in such moments. Nevertheless, in such moments, her heart, Kaori, acts or speaks.
She herself does not know her past and only gets her name through Ryō, which is also her real name, which Li Jian Qiang gave her. Before that she was in the training camp of Zheng Dao Hui "No. 27" and afterwards Glas Heart. Her name means "Kaori's heart" in Chinese. Through years of relentless training, her reactions and actions are not those of a normal person, but she overreacts at the beginning. But through Ryo's patience and instinct, she gradually becomes a "normal" person again. She sees her parents in Ryō and Kaori and calls both Ryō-papa / Kaori-mama.

Kaori Makimura ( 槇 村 香 )

She is the daughter of a criminal who dies in an investigation. She is then adopted by Hideyuki Makimura's father, who was himself a police officer. She dies in a traffic accident at the beginning of the series, but "lives" on as a kind of guardian angel and appears in many key scenes through Xiangying. Her adoptive father dies in the service, which Kaori cannot accept and so she stands at Shinjuku station every day after school and waits for her father to come home from work. Kaori writes on City Hunter's board that her father should come back. Hideyuki didn't have the heart to tell her the truth.
Unlike City Hunter , she knows that she and Hideyuki are not blood related. She ran the City Hunter detective agency with Ryō until her death and was responsible for task acquisition and finances. She is in love with Ryō from the start and always reacts very jealously when he looks behind other women. She also finds Ryō bleeding with a wound on a back street and takes him to Doc's clinic . It is also she who selects the name "Ryō Saeba" for Ryō from a pile of driver's licenses and other official papers.

Falcon / Umibōzu ( フ ァ ル ッ コ ン / 海 坊 主 )

Like Ryō, he is a former mercenary and runs the Cafe Cat's Eye (an allusion to another work by Tsukasa Hōjō: Cat's Eye ) which is not very well attended and one of his only customers Kaori, Ryō, Saeko, Xiangying were or are. Furthermore, many meetings take place in the Cat's Eye. It is equipped with armored glass and there is a shooting range and a huge arsenal in the basement. Although he has gone blind since the last season of City Hunter, his senses, like Ryō's, are more than superhuman and keen. In this way, he recognizes every customer who has only been to see him once when he comes in through the door. Unlike City Hunter, he is Ryō friendly and prepared beforehand.
He gets his name Umibōzu from Ryō because he is bald, but Ryō himself often calls him Umi -chan. He always wears sunglasses and a mustache, is a good two meters tall and has a very powerful stature.

Saeko Nogami ( 野 上 冴 子 )

She is the chief of police in Tokyo and is often brought out of awkward situations by Ryō, where state authorities can no longer intervene. In contrast to City Hunter, she no longer provides him with jobs and no longer plays with her feminine charms.

Liu Xinhong ( 劉 信 宏 )

Like Xiangying, he is a former member of the Zheng Dao Hui and belonged to the Qinglong Department. He wore the number 36 in the training camp and, unlike Xian Ying, knows his real name from the start. Until the reunion, Xiangying had assumed that she killed him with a knife in the last test. After the Qinglong troops were crushed, he was declared dead by Zheng Dao Hui boss Li Jiang Qiang and given the personal task of forever looking after his lifesaver, Xiangying. Acting on the orders of the Qinglong group's conspirators, he assassinated Li Qian De without knowing that he was Zheng Dao Hui's boss . In the Cat's Eye he works as an employee and is one of the few who have to call Umibōzu Falcon.

reception

Volume 22 of the manga reached the top 10 of the Japanese manga charts after its release in 2007.

According to MangasZene magazine, Angel Heart is n't just a sequel to City Hunter . In contrast to City Hunter , Xiangying and its history take center stage. Ryō loosens up the series above all and lets the viewer experience his emotions. Hojo also shaped the atmosphere of the series, despite or above all because of the death of Kaori. The story is told thrillingly and, in comparison to City Hunter , more sophisticated in terms of drawing. The figures are drawn in more detail and appear more three-dimensional. In the anime, the character designs were implemented true to the original and the animation quality was also convincing.
