politics

Smith had been a member of the Labor Party since he was 16. First efforts for a city council mandate in Cambridge were unsuccessful, only in Sheffield she was elected to the local parliament there. In the general election in 2005 , she succeeded in entering the British Parliament through the Sheffield Hillsborough constituency and, after its dissolution, in the newly created constituency of Penistone and Stocksbridge in the 2010 , 2015 and 2017 elections. There she was parliamentary private secretary of Yvette Cooper from 2005 to 2008 and from October 2011 to September 2015 a member of the shadow cabinet . Her main areas of activity include education and training, the environment and traffic.

Smith is vehemently opposed to the United Kingdom leaving the European Union . She is co-chair of the All Party Parliamentary Water Group , a non-partisan group of MPs that deals with issues of water supply in the country. and which is co-financed by private companies in the water industry . In this function she spoke out vehemently against the nationalization of the water supply demanded by the shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer John McDonnell and described this as "politics of the past". After she was also accused of opposing party leader Jeremy Corbyn and advocating fracking against the party line , the Labor Association of her constituency withdrew her confidence in November 2018. Smith suspected that there was an intrigue by members of the left wing of their party. As a result, Smith, along with six other Labor MPs, resigned from the parliamentary group and party in February 2019. The Independent Group , which was founded at the time and later converted into the Change UK party , left Smith in June of that year and joined the Liberal Democrats in early September 2019. She justified the move by stating that this party would be most vehemently opposed to leaving the EU.
