Angelic Layer ( Japanese 機動 天使 エ ン ジ ェ リ ッ ク レ イ ヤ ー , Kidō Tenshi Enjerikku Reiyā , German “Mobile Angel Angelic Layer”) is a manga by the Mangaka group CLAMP . The work was as Anime implemented television series and is in the genres of comedy , action , science fiction , drama and Shonen lane.

action

Shūko Suzuhara ( 鈴 原 萩 子 ), the mother of the girl Misaki Suzuhara ( 鈴 原 み さ き ), flees from her family from the countryside to Tokyo when her daughter is five years old. At the age of twelve, Misaki also moved to Tokyo to attend middle school. In Tokyo she gets to know the game Angelic Layer . Two dolls, Angel , compete against each other, who are controlled by their creators through their thoughts. Anyone interested can buy kits for the dolls. Misaki is enthusiastic about it and a stranger in a white coat, whom she calls Uncle , explains the game to her. She buys a kit with him and she builds her own fishing rod, Hikaru ( ヒ カ ル ), from her aunt Shōko ( 浅見 祥子 ), with whom she will live from now on .

Soon she will face her first fight with Hikaru on the Angelic Layer platform . But at the tournament she loses against the player Hatoko Kobayashi ( 小林 鳩 子 ). She then competes against the famous player Ringo Seto ( 瀬 戸 林子 ) with her Angel Ranga, who she has to defeat in order to advance in the tournament. You can do this with the knowledge that you acquired in the previous fight. In the following fights, she has to defend herself against unfair opponents and continue to fight when Hikaru is injured. In their fights, Misaki is supported by her friends Kotaro and Tamayo, as well as uncle.

Finally, Misaki also wins the big Angelic Layer tournament and then competes against the legendary Angel Athena . To Misaki's surprise, this is led by her mother. It is revealed that she invented the game Angelic Layer together with her uncle in Tokyo and that she is now making contact with her daughter through it.

Origin, conception and style

The manga takes up the theme of duel games, which was particularly popular at the time of its creation through series such as Pokémon . The previous works are also parodied. Angelic Layer is Clamp's first shōnen manga, i.e. the first one that is primarily aimed at male audiences. But like many of the group's series, it also refers to other works. So Hikaru refers to the character of the same name in Magic Knight Rayearth and Hatako looks like Tomoyo Daidōji in Card Captor Sakura .

The series was largely determined by Satsuki Igarashi, who only worked in the background in the previous productions of the artist group Clamp. Therefore, the work shows significant differences to earlier works by the group. It is characterized by a reduced and minimalistic drawing style, simply drawn characters and often missing backgrounds. The eyes are smaller and more angular, the feet noticeably large. Super Deformed figures appear again and again .

Publication of the manga

The manga was published in Japan from July 1999 to October 2001 in the magazine Shōnen Ace of the Kadokawa Shoten publishing house. The series was later published in five edited volumes.

Carlsen Comics published the manga in full on the German market from June 2001. The translation is from Dorothea Überall. Angelic Layer then appeared in the USA on Tokyopop , in France on Pika Édition and in Italy on Star Comics . The Spanish edition was published by Editorial Ivréa and Grupo Editorial Vid and the Portuguese edition by JBC.

Production and publication of the anime

The manga was in 2001 by Studio Bones , directed by Hiroshi Nishikiori as anime - TV show filmed. The character design was created by Takahiro Komori and the artistic direction was taken over by Nobuto Sakamoto. The series was broadcast from April 1 to September 23, 2001 by the Japanese broadcaster TV Tokyo .

The Anime Network aired the anime in English, ABS-CBN and Hero in Tagalog. The series has also been translated into Spanish, French and Dutch. A German version was published in 2005 and 2006 by ADV Films and distributed by Universum Film GmbH .

The music in the series was composed by Kōhei Tanaka . The opening credits Be My Angel were sung by Atsuko Enomoto , the voice actress for the protagonist. The credits used up to episode 13 ☆ the starry sky ☆ by HL and from episode 14 Ame Agari ( 雨 あ が り , German "after the rain") by Moeko Matsushita .

Further adaptations and publications

In Japan, merchandise items such as costumes, puzzles, stationery and trading cards as well as the art book Angelic Layer Battle Book were published for the series . In addition, five music CDs were released.

reception

According to the trade journal Funime , Clamp succeeds in presenting a work that stands out from the rest with her first shōnen manga. Elements from other mangas in the genre, such as Pokémon, would be well adopted, sometimes parodied. The manga is easy to read, but exciting. The plot is somewhat confused, but still logical. As usual with Clamp, the drawings are good and the manga is particularly recommended for fans of the group of artists.

The AnimaniA writes that the work falls out of the previous work of Clamp, precisely because it is aimed at a male audience and therefore takes over many Shonen elements. But it is still amusing and offers typical Clamp styles. The drawing style is simple, but still successful. The greatest similarities are still there with Clover and Card Captor Sakura . The characters are “simply knitted”, but the plot is still exciting. The implementation as an anime offers very good animation quality and is close to the template in terms of content and style.

According to Splashcomics, the manga is exciting and rich in slapstick elements. The characters are drawn cute, but in the end the tension subsides , especially since the main character Misaki is portrayed as outstanding and overly clever .
