Angiolina Ortolani-Tiberini , maiden name Maria Angela Ortolani Valandris ( May 10, 1834 in Bergamo - December 31, 1913 in Ardenza ) was an Italian opera singer with a soprano voice . She sang a number of leading roles on major European stages and was the first Ofelia in Franco Faccio's long-forgotten opera Amleto , which is now being played again .

life and work

Ortolani's father ran an osteria , a restaurant, in her hometown of Bergamo. She studied singing at the Milan Conservatory with Francesco Lamperti - supported by her Bergamasque compatriot Gaetano Donizetti , who heard her sing as a young girl in the Osteria dei Tre Gobbi . She made her debut on August 23, 1853 with great success in the title role of Donizetti's Parisina at the Teatro Riccardi in her hometown.

In the following five seasons she continued to sing leading roles at the Teatro Ricciardi, but also worked on her international career. In 1858, when she sang the title role in Linda di Chamounix at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona , she fell in love with the Italian tenor Mario Tiberini , who was also engaged at Liceu. The two married on April 14, 1859 in Barcelona and subsequently performed mostly together and given numerous first and world premieres. For example, both singers helped the librettist Arrigo Boito and the composer Franco Faccio to great success on May 30, 1865 as Hamlet and Ophelia in Amleto , premiered at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa . However, when Ortolani's husband had to sing Hamlet at La Scala in Milan in 1871 despite indisposition, the work immediately disappeared from the repertoire and was forgotten for 143 years.

The couple has appeared on numerous stages in Italy, Spain, Russia and the United States and has also made guest appearances at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London and at the k. and k. Vienna Court Opera as well as in Lisbon and Paris. After her marriage, the singer was always announced under the double name Ortolani-Tiberini. After her husband's vocal power had waned in 1875 and signs of mental confusion became noticeable, Angiolina Ortolani-Tiberini largely withdrew from the stage to take care of her partner. He spent the last part of his life in a sanatorium in Reggio nell'Emilia , where he died in October 1880.

Ortolani returned once more to the stage of her hometown Bergamo in 1884: after the theater lost the soprano, she took on the role of Rosina in Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia . She spent her last years secluded in her villa in Ardenza near Livorno , where she died at the age of 79. She had three sons, Arturo, Corradino and Mario, all three of whom were still alive at the time of her death. She was buried next to her husband at the Cimitero Monumentale di Milano .
