If one understands the vernaculars in the former Free State of Anhalt by Anhalt dialects (territorial part of the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt , to which other typical dialects in Saxony-Anhalt belong), one must geographically distinguish three areas :

  1. The areas around Dessau , Köthen (Anhalt) and Bernburg (Saale) show a fairly uniform hybrid of the north-east Thuringian and Mark-Brandenburg dialects , but with the high German “I”. It seems justified to speak of its own Anhalt dialect here, since language borders to the south and north are still perceptible today. In the south, the border is on the Fuhne river . There the language sounds significantly different in the next village, this is the dialect of the northern surroundings of Halle ( Easterly ). In the north, the language border to Anhalt-Zerbst runs along the Elbe and then to the East Westphalian dialect of the Magdeburg Börde south of Calbe (Saale). There are hardly any noticeable differences between these limits over a distance of approx.
  2. Anhalt-Zerbst lies north of the Elbe and has a Mark-Brandenburg dialect (more closely: a branch of Flämingischen ), which is often also referred to as Middle Brandenburg . It belongs to the East Low German language area (e.g. "ick" instead of "I").
  3. The Ballenstedt and Harzgerode area in the Harz Mountains , as former residences of the Princes of Anhalt-Bernburg , still belongs to Anhalt (not territorially related to the aforementioned) . Here is nordthüringisch spoken.
