The film is based on the true story of Marianne Bachmeier . In this film, her name is Marianne Grünwald and she shoots her daughter Anna's murderer in the courtroom. With this act she becomes a media event and heroine among the population. The research into the life of Marianne Grünwald, however, soon casts doubt on Marianne's integrity and the mother soon appears to the public as a wicked mother .

Burkhard Driest wrote his script based on the book by Stern journalist Heiko Gebhardt . While filming was still in progress, a race began with the film production, Der Fall Bachmeier - No Time for Tears by Hark Bohm, which was taking place at the same time .
