The Annastift (since 2016: Diakovere Annastift ) is a nursing facility, whose further focus is on services for participation and vocational training. Since January 1, 2016, the facility has been part of the Diakovere Group . The various buildings of the Annastift are located in the Hanover district of Kleefeld , its vocational training centers in the district of Mittelfeld and on Hildesheimer Straße .

Description of the Annastift

The motherhouse of the Annastift is in close proximity to the Stephansstift and the former Evangelical University of Applied Sciences Hanover and borders directly on the Hermann-Löns-Park east of the city center.

The Annastift consists of the following facilities:

  • orthopedic hospital (178 beds)
  • Mira Lobe School, state-approved all-day school for children and young people with physical disabilities
  • Schools for social and health professions
  • Living and care area
  • Vocational training center

In addition, war-wounded children from the war in Afghanistan are cared for.

history

The name of the monastery goes back to Anna Freifrau von Borries (1854–1951) who, with her fortune, laid the foundations for the establishment of a nursing home for “young cripples ” in 1891 . In 1897 the architect Heinrich Wegener built the nursing home on Kirchröder Strasse (today: Anna-von-Borries-Strasse). There handicapped children and adolescents received medical and orthopedic treatment, a Christian upbringing as well as school and vocational training. Apprenticeships were, for example, basket weaver, brush maker, tailor or seamstress. The medical management was held from 1901 to 1923 by the orthopedic surgeon Peter Bade , who, among other things, introduced X-ray diagnostics at Annastift. 1926–1927 the main building was expanded according to plans by the architect Werner Koech .

During the First and Second World Wars , the monastery also served as a military hospital . In the Weimar Republic , the monastery specialized in the orthopedic hospital with around 450 beds.

After 1933 the “non-Aryan” medical staff were dismissed due to increasing pressure , including the chief physician Bruno Valentin . Although no compulsory sterilizations were carried out in Annastift , the authorities were informed about those affected from there. Apparently the monastery was not involved in National Socialist murders .

After the air raids on Hanover in World War II, the Annastift was the only (almost) undamaged hospital in Hanover. In 1950, a new building for 195 beds was built with funds from the state of Lower Saxony and donations from the USA .

In order to survive in a competitive health system, the Annastift, the Henriettenstiftung and the Friederikenstift merged with their operating companies in 2006 to form the Holding Diakonische Dienst Hannover gGmbH , since January 1, 2016 DIAKOVERE .
