Anne McLaughlin (born March 8, 1966 in Greenock ) is a Scottish politician and member of the Scottish National Party (SNP).

Life

McLaughlin attended Port Glasgow High School and then studied at the University of Glasgow and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama . She then led theater groups in socially disadvantaged areas and then worked for a non-profit organization for the deaf-blind. She also organized Cancer Research UK's fundraising and helped rebuild Sri Lanka's economy after the 2004 tsunami .

Political career

McLaughlin has been an active member of the SNP since the late 1980s. She first appeared for her party in the 1999 city council elections in Glasgow, but was not elected. In the 2001 general election she applied for the direct mandate of the Glasgow Rutherglen constituency . It received the second largest share of the vote with 14.2%, but was clearly defeated by Labor candidate Thomas McAvoy . In 2003 she ran for the Scottish general election in the Glasgow Rutherglen constituency , but received only the third highest number of votes. McLaughlin also missed the direct mandate of the Glasgow Springburn constituency in 2007 . When her party colleague Bashir Ahmad died in 2009, McLaughlin slipped as the next on the SNP's regional electoral list for the Glasgow electoral region and moved into the Scottish Parliament for the first time on February 9, 2009 . She previously worked as a political advisor to MP Bob Doris . In the Scottish parliamentary elections in 2011 , McLaughlin was only able to achieve second place behind Paul Martin in her constituency of Glasgow Provan and consequently left parliament at the end of the legislative period.

After the death of the House of Commons David Cairns , new elections were scheduled in June 2011 in the constituency of Inverclyde , to which McLaughlin ran. Although it was able to increase the share of the vote for the SNP significantly, it was nevertheless clearly defeated by the Labor politician Iain McKenzie . In the general election in 2015 , McLaughlin ran for the SNP in the constituency of Glasgow North East . On election day, she was able to prevail against the incumbent Labor politician Willie Bain and subsequently moved into the House of Commons for the first time. With a loss of votes, she left parliament in the early general election in 2017 . She was defeated by Labor candidate Paul Sweeney with a difference of only 242 votes.
