Anne Pippin Burnett

Anne Pippin Burnett (born October 10, 1925 in Salt Lake City , Utah , † April 22 or 23 , 2017 in Kingston , Ontario ) was an American classical philologist .

Life

Anne Pippin Burnett studied at Swarthmore College ( BA 1946), Columbia University ( MA 1947) and the University of California, Berkeley , where she worked as a research assistant from 1952 and received her Ph.D. received his doctorate . From 1957 to 1958 she worked as an instructor in classics at Vassar College , and from 1960 to 1961 as editor and translator at the Hachette publishing house in Paris. She then worked as an Assistant Professor , Associate Professor and Professor of Classical Languages ​​and Literature at the University of Chicago . She was retired in 1990 .

Burnett was 1978 Martin Lecturer at Oberlin College , 1984 Mary White Lecturer at Trinity College of the University of Toronto , 1989/1990 Walsh Lecturer at the University of Chicago and 1993/1994 Sather Professor at the University of Berkeley.

Anne Pippin Burnett was particularly concerned with the archaic and early classical poetry of the Greeks. She wrote essays and monographs on the poets (especially Pindar , but also Archilochus , Alkaios , Sappho , Bacchylides and Stesichoros ) and on the Attic and Hellenistic tragedy (especially Euripides ). She died on April 22 or 23, 2017 at the age of 91.
