Annette Zippelius (born June 25, 1949 ) is a German physicist.

Professional background

Annette Zippelius studied physics at the Technical University of Munich and at the University of Colorado in Boulder (USA), where she earned her master's degree. She did her doctorate in 1976 at the Technical University of Munich with the thesis A kinetic theory of classical liquids . She then worked as a postdoc at Harvard for two years and at Cornell for one year . In 1982 she completed her habilitation in Munich. From 1983 she worked at the Research Center Jülich .

Since 1988 she has held a chair for theoretical physics at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen . This makes her the first female C4 physics professor in the Federal Republic of Germany. Her research areas are highly complex physical and biological systems such as spin glasses and neural networks . She also worked closely with Erwin Neher , who later won the Nobel Prize for Medicine .

Memberships

Annette Zippelius is a member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen and from February 2005 to 2011 she was a member of the Science Council in Germany. From 2007 to 2014 Annette Zippelius was a fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization , which combined research opportunities at this MPI and the management of a working group. Fellow status was extended in 2011. In 2007 she became a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) .
