Annibale Bozzuti (born February 2, 1521 in Montecalvo Irpino near Naples , † October 6, 1565 in Chiaia near Naples) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

As a member of a family of the Neapolitan patriciate, he appeared in 1547 as a spokesman for the demonstrators who opposed the introduction of the Inquisition by Viceroy Pedro Álvarez de Toledo . After the unrest was put down, he and other leaders were excluded from the indult that Emperor Charles V granted the city of Naples, and therefore went into exile in Rome. Family ties with Alessandro Farnese made a career at the Roman Curia easier for him, as did his study of both rights. He was prefect of conclaves several times, and from 1556 also a chamber cleric.

After Farnese's resignation, Bozzuti was Archbishop of Avignon from 1551 to 1562 , but then had to cede the Archbishopric again to Farnese. He was elevated to cardinal on March 12, 1565 by Pope Pius IV , a Neapolitan, and received San Silvestro in Capite as the titular church .

A few months later he died of a stone disease in Chiaia, a district of Naples. He was buried in the Cathedral of Naples .
