Anschel Stern (born May 1820 in Steinbach ; died March 11, 1888 in Hamburg ) was a German rabbi and educator .

Live and act

Ansel Stern was the son of a rabbinical scholar. At the age of twelve he went to Fulda , where he received classical religious instruction from Rabbi Seckel Wormser . He later moved to Wiesenbronn to learn from Seligmann Bär Bamberger . Together with Bamberger, Stern went to Würzburg in 1840 , where Bamberger took over the position of district rabbi. Here Stern studied oriental studies at the University of Würzburg for some time and earned money raising the children of Baron Joel Jakob von Hirsch . After the Semicha , Stern went to Bad Homburg vor der Höhe . Here he worked as a religion teacher and assistant rabbi.

In 1851, Stern took over the position of rabbi in Hamburg as the successor to Isaak Bernays . While his predecessor was able to enforce extensive decision-making powers, this star was denied. Nevertheless, he managed to work sustainably for the good of the community. In 1862 he founded the Mekor Chajim association in Hamburg. The association offered religious instruction which was used by parishioners for regular Talmudic studies. Stern headed the Talmud Torah School from 1851 , which he expanded and ran until it was recognized as a high school in 1869. In the course of the reorganization of the German-Israelite Congregation in 1867, Stern was appointed Chief Rabbi . He took over the pastoral care of the Orthodox members belonging to the synagogue association .

Stern, of whom hardly any printed works are known, had married a daughter of the British chief rabbi Nathan Adler in 1855 . They had nine children, including Sara Stern, Gertrud Baer's mother .

Stern is buried in the Jewish cemetery in Hamburg-Langenfelde (grave number: B154). It was Anschel Stern who obtained permission from the Prussian government in 1886 to lay out the Jewish cemetery on Försterweg in Langenfelde.
