Antônio Barbosa

Antônio Barbosa SDB (born May 10, 1911 in São Paulo , † May 3, 1993 in Campo Grande , Mato Grosso do Sul ) was a Brazilian religious and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Campo Grande .

Life

Antônio Barbosa joined the order of the Salesians of Don Bosco and was ordained a priest on December 6, 1936 .

On January 23, 1958, Pope John XXIII appointed him . as the first bishop of the newly founded diocese of Campo Grande , he received his episcopal ordination from the Apostolic Nuncio in Brazil, Archbishop Armando Lombardi , on May 1st of the same year. Co- consecrators were the coadjutor Archbishop of Belo Horizonte , João Resende Costa SDB, and the Bishop of Petrolina , Antônio Campelo de Aragão SDB.

He participated in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council as a council father.

With the elevation of the diocese of Campo Grande to the archbishopric on November 27, 1978 Barbosa became its first archbishop. On December 12, 1986, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.
