Antônio Possamai

Antônio Possamai SDB (born April 5, 1929 in Ascurra ; † October 27, 2018 in Porto Velho ) was a Brazilian religious and Roman Catholic bishop of Ji-Paraná .

Life

Antônio Possamai made his first profession on January 31, 1948 in the religious community of the Salesians of Don Bosco . After studying philosophy from 1948 to 1950 in São João del Rei and from 1954 to 1957 at the Institute of Pius XI. in São Paulo had studied theology, he received in São Paulo on December 8, 1957 ordination . In the religious community he was director of studies, pastor and parish vicar, finally from 1963 to 1972 Provincial Vicar in the Province of Porto Alegre and from 1976 to 1982 Provincial of the Province of Recife.

On March 4, 1983, Pope John Paul II appointed him the first bishop of the diocese of Ji-Paraná, which a few days earlier had been raised to the diocese by the territorial prelature of Vila Rondônia. The Bishop of Joinville , Gregório Warmeling , gave him on May 15 of that year in Ascurra the episcopal ordination . Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Cuiabá , Bonifácio Piccinini SDB, and the Bishop of Rio do Sul , Tito Buss . His coat of arms motto read: "O Senhor me ungiu para Evangelizar os pobres."

He was Chairman of the Commission for Migrant Pastoral Care and Chairman of Region North I of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference. In 2007 he took part as a delegate of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference in the fifth general conference of Latin American bishops and cardinals in Aparecida .

On April 11, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related retirement. He was succeeded by his Salesian confrere, Bishop Bruno Pedron SDB.
