Antônio do Carmo Cheuiche OCD (born June 13, 1927 in Caçapava do Sul , Rio Grande do Sul , Brazil ; † October 14, 2009 in Ivoti , Rio Grande do Sul) was a Brazilian religious and Roman Catholic auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Porto Alegre .

Life

Antônio do Carmo Cheuiche joined the religious order of the Discalced Carmelites at and studied philosophy and theology in Burgos , Spain, and journalism at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) . He was ordained a priest on March 10, 1951 . He completed doctoral studies in philosophy and literature at the Complutense University in Madrid and postgraduate studies at the University of Vienna and the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg .

In 1969 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. Appointed titular bishop of Sutunurca and auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Santa Maria in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul . The episcopal consecration donated the bishop of Santa Maria, Luís Victor Sartori , on June 29, 1969; Co- consecrators were Alfredo Vicente Cardinal Scherer , Archbishop of Porto Alegre, and João Cláudio Colling , Former Archbishop of Porto Alegre. On May 5, 1971 he was appointed auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Porto Alegre. Pope John Paul II granted his resignation on June 27, 2001.

Antônio do Carmo Cheuiche was a member of the Pontifical Commission on the Cultural Heritage of the Church , the Pontifical Council for the Laity , the Pontifical Commission for Justice and Peace and the Pontifical Council for the Unbelievers . For 25 years he was a member of the Theological Commission of the Latin American Bishops' Council (CELAM), where he was first president of the department for the laity, then president of the department for the unbelievers and finally founding president of the department for culture. He was also a consultant for the Institute for Pastoral Theology Latin America (ITEPAL). He wrote several books and numerous essays on culture, Christianity, inculturation and urban pastoral care.

He founded the Associação dos Dirigentes Cristãos de Empresas (ADCE) , an association of Christian entrepreneurs.

The Brazilian Bishops' Conference (Conferência Nacional dos Bispos do Brasil - CNBB) spoke in an obituary about Antônio do Carmo Cheuiche: “It was a gift from God to the Church in Brazil and Latin America. His presence opened the Latin American Catholic Church to important contemporary issues. "
