Antanas Maceina

Antanas Maceina (born June 27, 1908 in Bagrène, Marijampolė district , Lithuania , † 1987 in Münster ) was a Lithuanian philosopher , educator and poet .

Live and act

Maceina studied theology , Lithuanian and German, philosophy and education in Vilkaviškis , Leuven , Freiburg im Breisgau , Strasbourg and Brussels . Doctorate in 1934, habilitation in 1935. At the beginning of the Soviet occupation in 1940, he and his family fled to Germany. When Lithuania was occupied by the Germans in 1942, he returned to his homeland. There he was dean of the philosophical faculty at the university and taught philosophy and German literature ( Rainer Maria Rilke ). 1947-1949 he headed the Catholic youth organization Ateitininkai .

In 1944 Maceina fled again to Western Europe and lived in Germany from 1949. There he taught philosophy at the Julius Maximilians University in Würzburg , Russian philosophy and Eastern European intellectual history at the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg, and Russian and Soviet philosophy as well as the philosophy of religion at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . He died in Münster in 1987 and was buried in the village cemetery in Brebersdorf .

Maceina's poems are signed with the pseudonym Antony Jasmantas .
