Antimenes painter
The Antimenes painter was an Attic vase painter of the black-figure style who lived around 530 to 510 BC. Worked.
The real name of the Antimenes painter has not been passed down. He was given an emergency name to distinguish it from other vase painters ; eponymous was a Kalos inscription on a hydria in Leiden . Of the 150 or so works that have survived, the majority consists of hydrates and standard amphorae . Most of the vases assigned to him were found in Etruria . He is associated with the workshop of the potter Andokides .
The Antimenes painter represents the common repertoire of his time: adventures of Heracles , Dionysus and his entourage as well as team scenes. He varies these common themes; his image compositions are described as clear. In his own, mostly idyllic creations, he often depicts smaller figures that are subordinate to the actual scenery. Examples of this are the fountain scene on the aforementioned Leiden hydria and a depiction of the olive harvest on an amphora in the British Museum in London .
The drawing style is similar to that of the Psiax , influences of the early red-figure style are also unmistakable. Nevertheless, the Antimenes painter, who found various imitators, remained true to the black-figure style. These imitators are often difficult to distinguish from the Antimenes painter. Some pieces from the late work in particular are distinguished by their fine and expressive drawings.
