Louis Clapisson

Antoine-Louis Clapisson (born September 15, 1808 in Naples , † March 19, 1866 in Paris ) was a French composer.

Life

Clapisson was the son of the horn player Antoine Clapisson, who was a member of the chapel of King Joachim Murat and later first horn player at the Theater of Bordeaux and from whom some compositions for horn have survived. He studied at the Paris Conservatory with Antonín Reicha and then worked as second violinist at the Paris Opera .

He composed a number of successful comic operas and was made Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1847. In 1854 he became a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts . From 1861 he taught harmony at the Conservatoire de Paris. In the following year, he was also the curator of the collection of historical musical instruments, most of which he owned and which he restored himself.
