Émile Deschamps
Émile Deschamps , origin. Émile Deschamps de Saint-Amand , (born February 20, 1791 in Bourges , Cher department , † April 23, 1871 in Versailles , Yvelines department ) was a French poet , playwright , librettist and translator.
Life
Deschamps was the older brother of the writer Antony Deschamps (1800–1869). At the age of 21 Deschamps made his successful debut in 1812 with the poem La paix conquise , which even brought him the attention of Emperor Napoleon .
Deschamps was friends with, among others, Alexandre Guiraud , Victor Hugo , Jules de Rességuier , Alexandre Soumet and Alfred de Vigny . With these they formed one of the first romantic cénacles . Alphonse de Lamartine was occasionally present at these meetings, which regularly took place in Deschamps' apartment . With some, including his brother, Deschamps was also one of the Parnassians .
Henri de Latouche , with whom Deschamps successfully staged the comedy in verse Le tour de faveur in 1818 , also belonged to this . In 1824 Deschamps founded the literary-artistic magazine La Muse française together with Victor Hugo . He signed his poems, novels and other essays published there with the pseudonym the young moralist .
Deschamps has worked as a librettist for Daniel-François-Esprit Auber , Vincenzo Bellini , Hector Berlioz , Jacques Fromental Halévy , Giacomo Meyerbeer and Gioachino Rossini . As a translator he made outstanding contributions to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller , but he was also praised for his translations from English and Spanish.
Due to the political events of the February Revolution in 1848 and his incipient blindness , Deschamps slowly withdrew and settled in Versailles for the rest of his life . Eight weeks after his 80th birthday he died there on April 23, 1871; he did not live to see his last wish - the end of the war .
