Antoine de Laforet
Antoine René Charles Mathurin, comte de Laforêt - also Comte de La Forêt - (born August 7, 1756 in Aire-sur-la-Lys , † August 2, 1846 at Fréchines Castle - Arrondissement Blois ) was a French diplomat in the service of the Ancien Régime , the First French Republic , the First Empire and the Restoration .
Life
Laforêt began military training and in 1772 became a second lieutenant in an infantry regiment. However, in 1774 he switched to the diplomatic service and in 1779 was appointed secretary of the French legation to the United States . Successively he held the post of French Vice Consul in Savannah , Philadelphia and New York and then in 1788 became Consul General. In September 1793 he returned to France and became Deputy Minister, Jean Antoine Joseph Fauchet. On November 5, 1796, both were dismissed, but on July 18, 1797, the French Foreign Minister, Talleyrand , put him in charge of his accounting department. In 1801, Laforêt accompanied Joseph Bonaparte as the first secretary of the French delegation to the negotiations of the Peace of Lunéville . He then worked in Munich before he was sent to the Reichstag in Regensburg as a representative of France . There he played an important role in negotiating and enforcing the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss . On May 1, 1805, he took on the role of an authorized minister in Berlin . In 1808 he was appointed ambassador to Madrid and carried out this task for five years. In 1813 he negotiated the Treaty of Valençay with the representative of Ferdinand VII , José Miguel de Carvajal . After the resignation of Napoleon Bonaparte , the Bourbon king Louis XVIII transferred him . Head of the Foreign Ministry of the Provisional Government (Première Restauration) , which he held briefly from April 3 to May 12, 1814. After Napoleon's return, Laforêt was elected to the Parliament of the Rule of the Hundred Days on May 11, 1815 . During the second Restoration, Laforêt was again appointed Minister Plenipotentiary for Relations with the Allies.
Honors
On January 28, 1809, Laforêt was appointed Count of the French Empire (comte de l'Empire). In 1813 he received the Grand Cross of the Order of Reunification . On August 20, 1814, he was awarded the "Grand Cordon" of the Legion of Honor.
In March 1819 he was appointed peer of France and was a member of the Chambre des Pairs until 1830 . In 1825 Laforest became a Ministre d'État . In the July Revolution of 1830 Laforêt lost these honorary posts.
