Antonín Kubálek

Antonín Kubálek (born November 8, 1935 in Libkovice , † January 19, 2011 in Prague ) was a Canadian pianist and music teacher of Czech origin.

Life

Kubálek first had piano lessons from Otakar Heindl and was then from 1952 to 1957 a student of Oldřich Kredba at the Prague Conservatory and until 1959 of Zdeněk Jílek at the Music Academy. From 1961 to 1968 he taught at the Prague Conservatory, performed in concerts and on the radio and played records with Supraphon .

In 1968 he emigrated to Canada and became a Canadian citizen six years later. In 1969 he made his debut at the Walter Hall of the University of Toronto and shortly thereafter had his first appearances with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra . This was followed by numerous radio recordings and live performances with other orchestras, the Vághy and the Orford String Quartet and as accompanists to musicians such as Victor Braun , Lois Marshall and Roxolana Roslak .

From 1974 to 1975 he performed all of Mozart's sonatas at St. Paul's Center in Toronto . He has given world premieres of works by Walter Buczynski , Ka Nin Chans , Paul Kilburn , Rudolf Komorous , Milan Kymličkas , Marjan Mozetichs , Norman Shermans and Peeter Tammearus . Glenn Gould produced a recording of Sonata No. 1 by Erich Wolfgang Korngold . For the US bicentenary he recorded an LP with his own arrangements of compositions by John Philip Sousa . Since 1986 he has worked as a pianist, producer and author of liner notes for Dorian Records .

Kubálek taught at the Brodie School of Music and Modern Dance in Toronto from 1969 to 1975 and gave summer courses at the Blue Mountain School of Music in Collingwood in 1975 and 1976 . From 1979 he was a teacher at the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto , later at the University of Toronto (1996–2002) and York University (1997–2002).

In 1991 he performed in Czechoslovakia for the first time since his emigration. During his performance during the Prague Spring 2002 in the Rudolfinum , the house of the Czech Philharmonic in Prague, he was celebrated with standing ovations. In 2003 he founded the Kubálek International Piano Courses , a festival for young pianists that takes place annually in Zlaté Hory .
