Anton Eggstein (born March 3, 1780 in Burgau , † March 13, 1819 in Munich ) was a German brewer and member of the first Bavarian state parliament .

Live and act

Anton Eggstein lived as a beer brewer and host in his home town of Burgau. He was married with two sons and a daughter.

Due to the Bavarian constitution of 1818 , an elected representative body was introduced in the Kingdom of Bavaria , the Bavarian Estates Assembly in Munich. It consisted of two chambers, the Chamber of Reich Councilors and the Chamber of Deputies (Landtag) .

Eggstein was the first choice for the Bavarian States General (December, 1818) for the Upper Danube district elected to the Chamber of Deputies (parliament). He was in class V of the elected.

For the opening ceremony of the first Bavarian State Parliament on February 1, 1819, the members of parliament came to Munich from their home communities. The meetings dragged on until the end of the state parliament on July 25 of that year; the entire legislative period lasted until 1825, although the members usually only stayed in the state capital during the meeting of the chamber and otherwise worked at home.

Anton Eggstein had rented a room in what was then Gasthof Döllerer im Tal (Munich) in 1819, during his first parliamentary term . There he fell ill with a rot in his head and died unexpectedly of it on March 13, 1819, in his room.

He was the first Bavarian MP to die during his parliamentary work and was buried on March 16 with great solemnity in the Old Southern Cemetery in Munich . A funeral procession was organized for the parliamentarians of both chambers, from the Ständehaus to the cemetery. There the burial took place according to the Catholic rite, by a clergyman from the Frauenkirche . The funeral speech at the grave was held by the member of the state parliament, Pastor Carl Borromäus Egger (1772–1849), a popular preacher and writer at the time. It later appeared in print. Directly behind the coffin stepped as a representative of the Reichsratskammer its Vice-President Count Franz Erwein von Schönborn-Wiesentheid and as a representative of the Chamber of Deputies its President Baron Sebastian von Schrenck . Since Anton Eggstein had been a member of the civil military in his home town of Burgau since 1803 and held the rank of captain of the Bavarian Landwehr there , he was buried in such a uniform and a company of the Munich civil military gave him the funeral conduct.

tomb

The following characteristics were written on his tombstone:

He was an active landlord, honest brewer, faithful husband, upright father, devout Catholic Christian, a gentleman concerned for the welfare of the fatherland. "

- Obituary in Volume 13, the hearing of the Chamber of Bavarian Members of Parliament, 1819

Because of the completely surprising death, the motto from the works of St. Bernard of Clairvaux was added: "Because death awaits you in all places, you also expect it in all places if you want to be wise."
