Anton Huonder SJ (born December 25, 1858 in Chur , † August 23, 1926 in Bonn ) was a Swiss Catholic theologian and writer .

Life

Anton Huonder was the son of the Romansh writer Gion Antoni Huonder . He attended the court school in Chur , then from 1868 to 1874 by Benedictine monks led convent school in Disentis and the Collegiate School in Engelberg Abbey . In 1875 he passed the Matura in Feldkirch, Austria , and then entered the Jesuit order . Since the Jesuits were banned in Switzerland at that time and exposed to severe repression in the German Empire as a result of the Kulturkampf , Huonder completed his studies from 1875 to 1891 at the study houses of the Order in Valkenburg in the Netherlands and in Ditton Hall in England , where he was ordained a priest in 1888 .

After several years in America, he returned to Europe. Here he was mainly active as a retreat leader and pastor for priests . In addition, he published a number of treatises on the history of the Catholic mission ; He was also a member of the editorial team of the magazine " The Catholic Missions ", of which he was editor-in-chief from 1901 to 1912 and from 1916 to 1918. Huonder was known for his critical attitude to the prevailing "Europeanism" in the Catholic mission of his time and campaigned for the promotion of a national clergy in the mission countries as well as the adaptation of Catholicism to the respective social conditions (so-called accommodation ).

In addition to specialist books on Catholic missions and articles for mission magazines, Anton Huonder also wrote narrative works for children and young people, most of which appeared in the series “From faraway lands” that he oversees. His books have been translated into more than a dozen languages; some were put on up to eighteen times.
