The Königstrasse is a road in Berlin district Wannsee ( Steglitz-Zehlendorf ) and a portion of the Bundesstrasse 1 . As a direct connection from Berlin to Potsdam , the road is particularly busy during the day.
course
Coming from Berlin, Königstrasse emerges as a section of Berlin-Potsdamer Chaussee just before the Wannseebrücke from Potsdamer Chaussee running through Nikolassee. It then leads through the residential and business area of the Wannsee district, over the Schäferberg - through the EU bird sanctuary Westlicher Düppeler Forst - to the Glienicker Bridge . Behind the Glienicke Bridge, it runs as Berliner Straße through Potsdam.
history
Königstrasse was laid out in 1792 and was one of the first paved roads in Prussia . It was a section of the old Potsdamer Straße, which was used as a connection between the royal cities of Berlin and Potsdam. On old maps it is referred to as the Chaussee von Potsdam . The Chaussee was to take over the function of the Königsweg , which had been laid out 60 years earlier and connected the residential palaces in Berlin and Potsdam. A section of this adjacent route via Kohlhasenbrück also bears the name "Königstraße" in the Zehlendorf district today .
As is customary on large roads in Prussia, a Prussian milestone was also set up on the corner of Königstrasse / Chausseestrasse . This is labeled "III miles from Berlin", which indicates the distance to the starting point at Dönhoffplatz ( Berlin-Mitte ) in Prussian miles . This is the third milestone on the route from Berlin to Potsdam, the first is in Schöneberg , the second in Zehlendorf .
Before 1885 founded a trucking company, which had as Iron Gustav became known cab driver Gustav Hartmann a grocery shop on the King's Road.
In 1934, KPD chairman John Schehr and resistance fighters Erich Steinfurth , Rudolf Schwarz and Eugen Schönhaar were shot by the Gestapo on Königstrasse near Schäferberg . A memorial stone at this point commemorates them today.
