The EU bird sanctuary Westlicher Düppeler Forst is a European bird sanctuary ( SPA area ) in the Wannsee district of the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district in the extreme southwest of Berlin . The English-language name of the area is SPA Westlicher Düppeler Forst , whereby SPA stands for Special Protection Area (in German special protection area ).
The protected area is an important breeding area and passage area for migratory birds with natural forest areas with old trees and dead wood , varied banks as well as fens and succession areas .

The bird sanctuary includes the Pfaueninsel with the Pfaueninsel Castle , the English Landscape Park Klein-Glienicke with the Böttcherberg , the western part of the Düppeler Forest with its natural forest communities and the structurally rich and scenic banks of the Havel in the west and north . The Glienicke Palace and the associated hunting lodge Park has indeed to the corresponding Natura 2000 site not, however, a bird sanctuary.
In the West, the reserve borders the the federal state of Brandenburg belonging Jungfernsee , and in the east it extends as far as the Wannsee , and to the local situation Heckeshorn . In the south it borders on the banks of the Griebnitzsee , which is part of the route of the Teltow Canal .
The King's Road passes through the reserve from west to east. Other prominent places within the area are the Krughorn , the Moorlake, the local situation Nikolskoe with the church of St. Peter and Paul and the fourth highest elevation in Berlin, the Schäferberg with the telecommunications tower Berlin-Schäferberg .
The Wannseeweg , number 11 of the 20 green main paths , runs for kilometers between the Glienicker Bridge in the west and Heckeshorn in the east on the banks of the Havel through the protected area.
The location of the protected area on the outskirts of Berlin makes it an easily accessible destination for the residents of Berlin, Potsdam and Potsdam-Mittelmark as well as for tourists. The Glienicker Bridge, which connects Berlin and Potsdam near the protected area, and the two cultural landscapes of the Pfaueninsel and the English landscape park Park Klein-Glienicke in the protected area are well-known places beyond the region.
Protection assignment
As early as 1961, the area was declared a landscape protection area by the West Berlin Senate .
The bird sanctuary was established in June 2003 by the Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development in accordance with the guidelines 92/43 / EEC of the European Council of March 21, 1992 for the preservation of natural habitats and wild animals and plants (Habitats Directive) and the Birds Directive 2009/147 / EC (SPA) set up. The area of the Natura 2000 protection network of the European Union covers a total of 9.44 square kilometers. At the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation it is listed with the number 3544-306 and in the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) with the number 555537446.
The Berlin supreme nature conservation authority is responsible for the management. The underfunding of the project has been criticized by the Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany and the Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development and Environment.

In addition to the birds that are common in the urban area of Berlin, the following particularly protected or threatened bird species breed in the protected area:
- Kingfisher , Woodlark , middle spotted woodpecker , red-backed shrike , red kite , black kite , black woodpecker , eagle , Barred Warbler , Honey Buzzard , Red-breasted Flycatcher
With several dozen areas (as of 2006), the occurrence of the middle woodpecker represents a focus in the Berlin-Brandenburg area.
