Anton Kerschbaumer (born August 24, 1823 in Krems an der Donau ; † February 6, 1909 there ) was a Catholic priest, theologian, historian and Lower Austrian politician.

Live and act

Anton Kerschbaumer's paternal ancestors came from Bavaria. He was the son of his father of the same name, a municipal official in Krems and his wife Barbara nee. Fahrthofer from Weinzierl near Krems.

Kerschbaumer studied at the seminary of the diocese of St. Pölten and was ordained a priest in 1846 . From 1847 to 1850 he studied at the Higher Scientific Institute for Diocesan Priests at St. Augustine's in Vienna and received his doctorate in 1850 for Dr. theol. 1851-1871 he was Professor of Pastoral Theology at the Episcopal seminary in St. Poelten, interrupted by a period of study in Rome, from May 1860 to May 1861, he with an activity as a chaplain at the German National Foundation Collegio Teutonico Santa Maria dell'Anima Association . In 1871 he became pastor in Tulln , then in 1880 city pastor of Krems and titular propst von Stift Ardagger .

Kerschbaumer wrote numerous books, a. a. a two-volume diocesan history (up to Bishop Matthäus Josef Binder ). He was involved in the establishment of the diocesan magazine "Hippolytus" and in the establishment of the Krems City Museum (1891). Kerschbaumer was a member of the local council in Krems. In 1878 he was elected to the state parliament of Lower Austria .

In his book Missionarius apostolicus (1870) the prelate u. a. an impressive report of his visit to the stigmatized Maria von Mörl in 1847.

The priest had been a Knight of the Franz Joseph Order since 1875 and carried the Cross III. Class of the Order of the Iron Crown and was Commander of the Knightly Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
