Matthew Binder
Matthäus Josef Binder (born August 19, 1822 in Maria Laach am Jauerling , † August 14, 1893 ) was bishop of the Austrian diocese of St. Pölten .
Life
Matthäus Binder completed his studies at the Stiftsgymnasium Melk and in Krems . He then studied at the Lyceum in Krems and at the St. Pölten Diocesan Education Institute. On July 23, 1846, Binder was ordained a priest . From 1861 to 1867 he was head of the St. Pölten seminary and cathedral priest .
With his election as Bishop of St. Pölten on October 7, 1872 and papal confirmation on December 23 of the same year, a priest from his own clergy was appointed to the bishopric of St. Pölten for the first time. The episcopal ordination received Binder on 9 February 1873 the Viennese Bishop Johann Rudolf Kutschker . Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Linz , Franz Joseph Rudigier , and the Austrian military bishop Dominik Mayer .
Bishop Binder saw himself primarily as a pastor and, unlike his predecessor Joseph Feßler , was not interested in political processes. During his term of office, the diocese of St. Pölten celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1885.
Bishop Binder baptized the future Emperor Karl I of Austria on August 19, 1887 .
